How Nurses Can Help You

Our practice nurses have clinics throughout the day and offer a wide range of services listed below. If you would like to see any of them, please make an appointment at reception. They are available from 8:30am - 12:00pm and 3:00pm - 6:00pm. All new patients will be asked to attend for a new patient check. If you have any health queries, a nurse will return your call as soon as possible.

Travel Vaccinations & Non NHS Services
Travel vaccinations are mostly free and are given by the nurses (not doctors). For travel vaccinations it is best to start 6 weeks before leaving the country. We also give yellow fever vaccinations, if necessary.

Maternity and Family Planning
All doctors are able to offer family planning advice during their normal surgery. Thers is also a family planning / well woman clinic run at Balham Health Centre on the following days:

Tuesday: 6.00pm - 8.00pm
Thursday: 9.30am - 11.30am
Friday: 5.00pm - 7.00pm

This is a walk-in service, so you may need to wait. Please arrive 30 minutes prior to the closing times stated above. The practice nurses will see patients in their normal clinics for repeat contraceptive pill prescriptions, emergency pill prescriptions and repeat contraceptive injections.

Doctors also perform antenatal care for our patients. Appointments are made during normal surgery times. The practice also asks all new mothers to attend a post-natal check, 6 weeks after the birth of your baby.

Child Health

Baby clinics are held at the following times by appointment only. The clinic is for advice and routine child check ups and immunisations. If your baby is ill please make an appointment to see a doctor in a routine surgery.

Diabetes Clinic
Dr Ribeiro and a Practice Nurse hold a diabetic clinic on Thursday mornings. Patients are sent invitation letters and are booked by appointment only. Patients must have their bloods taken 1 week prior to their Diabetic appointment.
Asthma and COPD

Asthma and COPD are reviewed by the GPs and nurses during their normal surgery hours. Patients will be sent a yearly invitation asking them to attend a review of their symptoms and medication.

Heart Disease and Stroke

Patients will be sent a letter of invitation and are asked to book a review appointment with a GP.

Minor Surgery

Dr Lechi does minor surgery. He is only able to perform minor surgery as outlined in the new Effective Commissioning Guidelines. Other procedures such as joint injections and cryotherapy for warts and verrucae are also carried out. You will need to see one of the doctors first, before making an appointment with Dr Lechi.


Smoking Cessation Advice

Bedford Hill Family Practice has an in-house smoking cessation counsellor who can give advise, issue medication and provide support if you have given up, or are thinking about giving up smoking. Please make an appointment by contacting reception.

 

Asylum Seekers / Refugees
The practice welcomes the registration of asylum seekers / refugees and is happy for this information to be shared with local community organisations.
Where to go for Blood Tests

Bedford Hill Family Practice
Monday to Friday from 8:30am - 12:30pm. No appointment is necessary. Please note that this is a walk-in clinic and waiting times vary depending on patient numbers. The service is NOT for children under 16, who should go to St George's Hospital. Our busiest period is between 8.30am to 10.30am and on Tuesdays.


St George’s Hospital - Tooting Broadway
Monday to Friday from 8:00am - 4:45pm in Lanesborough Wing. No appointment is necessary.
Saturday 9:00am - 11:45am

St John's Therapy Centre - 162 St John's Hill, SW11 1SW (Adults Only)
Monday to Thursday from 8:00am - 1.00pm. No appointment is necessary.
Friday from 8:00am - 1.00pm. No appointment is necessary.

If you have been asked to go FASTING, you need to attend in the morning, having had nothing to eat from midnight the night before. You may have a drink of water on the morning of the blood test, but not tea, coffee, fruit juice etc.
